Protecting What Matters

Protecting What Matters

We’re on a journey to change the way we do things to more positively impact people and the planet.

From responsible product design to materials selection and waste reduction, we’re committed to improving our sustainability footprint through new thinking linked to meaningful targets. We’re taking considered, practical steps every day to make a serious, long-term impact.
Responsible Manufacturing

We’ve examined every part of our manufacturing and support processes to find the most effective ways to reduce our impact on the planet and increase sustainable, measurable practices.

Reducing Greenhouse Gas Emissions

As part of our journey, we are continuing to look at ways to reach our goal. So far, in our Sebel head office, we have:

  • Installed solar panels, reducing electricity grid usage, saving 157kwh/32.51CO2 per year
  • Transitioned to LED office lighting, saving 61,000kwh/12,631CO2 per year
  • Converted to hybrid vehicles
  • Reducing waste to landfill through a partnership with Wastepro by 28-ton
  • Upgrading 14 hot water systems for improved efficiency
  • Recycling and repurposing furniture and components

We measure this monthly by reviewing our energy costs and analyse annually. We also meet the requirements of Toitū Carbon Reduce Certification, having measured our greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in accordance with ISO 14064-1:2006.

Designed to Last

We have a deep belief in lifetime products and offer some of the longest warranties in the industry. From design right through to product end of life, we invest in finding better solutions and smarter ways of building products that last for generations, because quality and longevity are foundations of sustainability.

Creative, Responsible Design

A big part of our ethos is to live in the classroom so we understand, firsthand, the particular needs and demands of education spaces. We expect hundreds of students (and others) over multiple years to enjoy our products comfortably and safely, so enduring performance is a key aspect of our design process. We focus on fit for purpose products with long-lasting value to enhance education as well as other key sectors such as healthcare, hospitality, government, community, corrections and stadiums.

Over-Engineering

Engineering is the critical bridge between design and manufacture so we’re proud to over-engineer our products to ensure they’re built to last. All our departments work closely together to build product strength, durability and effectiveness from beginning to end.

World-Class Manufacturing

We have two state-of- the art manufacturing facilities in Sydney, Australia and Hastings, New Zealand – meaning we have direct control over the consistent quality of every one of our products.  Working with trusted suppliers, our highly skilled team use the very best materials to create high quality products. We genuinely care about the quality of our work – and it shows.

Warranties and Durability

Our products are designed, developed and engineered to last – and our warranties back that up. Durability is an important part of sustainability, so we thoroughly test everything we create in real-world environments. We simply wouldn’t put anything into market we didn’t believe would last.

How we test

How we test

We test durability in real-life classroom scenarios and are looking to extend that further with ‘destructive testing’ where we recreate extreme examples of use to build in even greater strength.

Considered Materials

We put everything under the microscope, looking for safe, healthy materials that are also robust enough to meet our high standards around strength and longevity.  Our Performance Edge tabletops are Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) Certified and we use non-hazardous materials such as ‘EO’ melamine board, harmless glues and other non-toxic raw materials. We partner with like-minded suppliers and together we assess, explore and secure environmentally smarter materials that make quality furniture and are better for people and our planet.

Sustainable Design Philosophy

Sustainability features are a core part of our design process.

  • Can design components be recycled or upcycled?
  • How much post-consumer recycled plastic can we include while maintaining strength and durability?
  • Can we design products for both ease of assembly and break down for recycling at the end of their life?
  • Can we design components that can be easily replaced without the need to purchase an entirely new piece of furniture?

All these questions form part of our design thinking. We always seek suppliers who hold a green enviro tick and give priority to fabrics from sustainability ranges.

We take it even further, specifically designing for efficient shipping, where furniture stacks like an intricate puzzle to achieve maximum use of a container – avoiding air travel and being ready for quick assembly in market.

Recycling Rules!

More and more of our products contain recycled material and we’re constantly on the lookout to upgrade components of existing products to something more sustainable. For instance, we’re currently exploring options to replace medium density fibre board (MDF) with material able to be recycled.

We're committed to having a positive impact on our environment, our community and our people in the following ways:

Supporting local community

For over 70 years we have been an integral part of the Australian Furniture industry, proudly supporting local manufacturing and Australian jobs. We have a family of over 100 staff who work in the Sebel business, and we enjoy the benefit of retaining our best employees with many of our people being with us for decades.

Caring for our people

As a family-owned business the health and well-being of our people is our highest priority. We take every precaution to protect their health, safety and wellness, and as a result our health and safety records are considered to be first class in the industry. We are ISO 45001 Health and Safety Management Accredited.

Modern slavery

We are committed to preventing modern slavery and human trafficking.

Creating engaging environments

For decades we have been helping create the best spaces with furniture to support a wide range of sectors. Furniture that facilitates social interaction, encourages collaboration, allows for quiet activities, spectator seating and most importantly, the health and wellbeing of the people who use it.

Operating in a socially responsible way

We make conscious commitments to improving our environmental impact across all areas of the business, from plastic recycling efforts and product lifecycle programmes to environmental accreditation initiatives and material selection.

Environmental management accreditation

Our manufacturing facilities are ISO 14001 Environmental Management Systems Accredited. We are reducing harmful effects on the environment and achieve ongoing improvements in environmental performance. We have developed initiatives and practices that are part of our ongoing mission to conserve energy and water, reducing waste, and increasing the use of recycled content in our business.

Product design and materials

We are committed to responsible product design and understanding the materials that go into our products. We actively work with our supply chain partners to choose the right raw materials and eliminate those that have potential impacts on human and environmental health. We work with some partners on the development of greener materials in our products. Whenever possible, we use materials made with a high percentage of recycled content as well as renewable materials.

Product lifecycle

Our products are designed to have a longer product life and are recyclable. Good product design and choosing the right materials ensures product longevity, making them desirable as well as lasting for generations. At the end of their very long life, they can also be ground down and recycled for use in components of our various products.
